Ultimate Guide to Animal Kingdom’s Wilderness Explorers Scavenger Hunt

Looking to add some hidden learning to your Animal Kingdom visit? Look no further than the Wilderness Explorers scavenger hunt! Wilderness Explorers is a free program at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where kids can go on an interactive scavenger hunt, complete activities and earn badges, all while learning in the process.

If your family likes Disney movies, be sure to watch Up before doing this activity. Russell in Up earned badges as a Wilderness Explorer, which is what this activity is based on. If you’re lucky, you may even meet him at Animal Kingdom!

How to become a Wilderness Explorer

To start your scavenger hunt, pick up a Wilderness Explorer book (and earn your first two badges!) when you enter the park. There’s a little booth set up near the bridge, as you’re walking towards the Tree of Life. If you miss this, you can always pick up your booklet at one of the other Wilderness Explorer locations inside of the park and just do this stop last.

What ages is the Wilderness Explorers program designed for

While the target age for Wilderness Explorers is 7-12, there were many older and even younger kids participating. Even adults can learn a lot about the various wildlife, plants, habitats, conservation, etc. The troop leaders are great at including even the youngest kids by modifying the questions they ask for badge earning.

Wilderness Explorers Badge Locations

Open up your booklet and see a map of all the different locations where you can earn badges. Kids will need to complete the corresponding activity and all of the ones we completed, the troop leader was super informative and did a mini lesson on the topic before handing out the badge, making this an educational experience as well.

Keep your eye out for the Wilderness Explorers symbols throughout the park as they will help you find the badge locations.

Is the Wilderness Explorers program worth doing

We think so! As a homeschooling family, we are always looking to incorporate learning into our daily life. And what is more fun than learning at Disney? Milana learned a ton about the various animals, plants, conservation efforts and so much more. We also got to visit parts of the park that many people skip, like Rafiki’s Planet Watch and Maharajah Jungle Trek. The cast members are super knowledgable on their assigned topic and will answer any questions your kids may have.

Pick up your free activity booklet next time you visit Animal Kingdom and see the park in a whole new way! And if you complete the entire booklet, be sure to tell the person handing out your last badge. You will be sworn in and receive a large badge sticker as a souvenir.
